At Freezer Jam 2020, our instructors will be traveling into Lafayette, IN, to teach a variety of skills to help attendees master their instruments. Two tunes, MacPherson’s Lament and The Marlin Spike, will be taught to beginner, intermediate, and advanced fifers and drummers. MacPherson’s Lament was chosen as a tune that spans three types of instruments we hear at our collective historical events, the fifes, pipes, and drums. The Marlin Spike will be taught by the composer, Greg Bacon, at Freezer Jam, which will be a special treat as attendees can not only meet the man behind the music but also take classes on composition by Mr. Bacon.
MacPherson’s Lament and The Marlin Spike are available in the Musick of the Old Northwest and listed below.
We plan to play both tunes as well at massed bands that the end of the concert, Saturday, February 15th. Additionally, songs taught at previous Freezer Jams, Sauganash, Colonel McBean’s Reel, and Power of Whiskey, will be played during warm-up for fifes and drums.
Instructors encourage attendees to warm-up before Freezer Jam with the tunes from past Freezer Jams and start working on the two new songs.
